The Battle of Eutaw Springs, Marion Leading a Charge
Battle of Eutaw Springs, September 8, 1781
Brig. Gen. Francis Marion led troops as a line commander, one of the few incidences where Marion - the “Swamp Fox”- transitioned from guerrilla warfare tactics to command of the right side of the America militia line. Jim Capers, his faithful free African American drum major, endured multiple wounds during the intense fighting - including a shot that went through his body but killed another drummer behind him! This battle was the last major open-field engagement in the Carolinas but also ranks among bloodiest single-day battles during entire Revolutionary War. While technically a tactical victory for British at the end of the day, it served as a strategic victory for Patriots by permanently crippling British control in the south.
