Prior to the Battle of Kettle Creek, February 14, 1779
Canvas Print 24x17in Open Edition
Paper Print 20x15in
The Battle of Kettle Creek, Feb. 14, 1779, Wilkes County, Georgia. The American militia led by Andrew Pickens, Elijah Clarke and John Dooly defeated a larger Loyalist force led by Col. James Boyd. The Patriot surprise attack routed the Loyalist on their way to join the British in Augusta, boosted Patriot moral and hindered British control in the backcountry.
The original 24x17in oil on canvas painting was commissioned by the American Battlefield Trust as a gift to departing board member - former University of Georgia head football coach - Vince Dooley.
Also depicted is Austin Dabney. He was the only African American to be granted land, 250 acres, by the state of Georgia in recognition of his military service during the American Revolution. I used Herschel Walker the great Georgia running back who played for Coach Dooley as my reference to paint him. Coach really liked that!
